Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self-defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is widely regarded as the world’s most effective grappling art.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themself against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique—most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can be trained for sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition or self-defense. Sparring (commonly referred to as “rolling”) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through the grades/belts.*

Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of traditional martial arts and modern combat styles, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete.

Modern MMA competition emerged in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Originally organized with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, competitors were pitted against one another with minimal rules for safety. Later promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport. Following these changes, the sport has seen increased in popularity with pay per view reach rivaling boxing and professional wrestling.*

MMA - FIGHT TEAM

Members of the FULCRUM Fight Team are accepted after an evaluation by coaches and by invitation only. Members must be willing to commit to the training regimen created by the coaching staff in order to prepare for their fights. They must be willing to be training partners for other athletes with upcoming fights. Interested members should speak with the coaching staff.

Keisuke started training in BJJ and MMA in 2001. In MMA competition, Keisuke has amassed a record of 5-0 in amateur competition and is a two-time FCFF lightweight champion. As a kid, Jonathan participated in wrestling and Tae Kwon Do. He first became seriously interested in training Jiu Jitsu after watching Kazushi Sakuraba fight Carlos Newton in the PRIDE Fighting Championships. He received his blue belt after 4 months and after training for two years, he received his purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and graduated from the SBG Instructor Candidate Course Program.

He currently holds the rank of Purple Belt in BJJ. His teaching experience includes several years of assistance coaching BJJ at Portland State University.

FULCRUM JIU JITSU was established in Lake Oswego, Oregon in 2011 with the mission of providing the highest quality of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Martial Arts training gym available in a safe, friendly, clean and healthy environment. It is our goal to meet the needs of everyone of our members whether they are training for high-level grappling event, Mixed Martial Arts fight, or just looking for a fun activity to get into shape with their friends.

FULCRUM's head coach is Keisuke Andrew, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blackbelt and undefeated amateur and pro Mixed Martial Arts fighter. Keisuke has trained in and taught Martial Arts for nearly ten years. As a coach and trainer, Keisuke is dedicated and enthusiastic about sharing his passion for Jiu Jitsu.

July 2011 - FULCRUM JIU JITSU Annouces Its Opening

KEISUKE ANDREW, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blackbelt, NoGi Grapplers Quest Advanced Winner, undefeated amateur and pro MMA fighter, and highly-regarded Martial Arts coach will be opening up a new gym in the heart of downtown Lake Oswego (397 N State Street, Lake Oswego, OR 97034) called FULCRUM JIU JITSU (www.fulcrumjj.com).

FULCRUM JIU JITSU will be offering BJJ, NoGI Grappling, MMA, Boxing and Kickboxing, as well as other related Martial Arts training. Keisuke is supported by second generation boxer and kickboxer Jason Tubania, who has taken the role of FULCRUM Stand Up Coach, and Jonathan Lee, BJJ Purple Belt and SBG ICC Graduate.

As a gym, FULCRUM is committed to offering someting for everyone. We would like to cater to the person who is just looking for a great place to train with friends, as well as athletes looking to compete in the highest levels of BJJ, Submission Grappling, and Mixed Martial arts.

NAMES IN THE GAME: KEISUKE ANDREW

Over the last couple of years, the Oregon MMA scene has exploded. Initially spearheaded by Team Quest, other gyms have begun to rise to prominence recently including Oregon Jiu-Jitsu and Straight Blast Gym. Among the talented young fighters to come out of Straight Blast is Keisuke Andrew, an electrifying lightweight currently tearing up the Northwest amateur circuit.

Over the past year, Andrew has gone undefeated and most recently captured the FCFF Lightweight Championship, which is considered one of the most prestigious and recognized amateur MMA championships in the US. Upon his title victory at the recent FCFF July 16th show, Andrew spoke to MMA Weekly to discuss the victory and his future plans.

“It felt great,” commented Andrew about his championship win over Mel Locke. “I’d been waiting two months for the fight and wanted the belt really bad.”

Andrew, a submission specialist, has become one of the most popular fighters on the circuit since his debut. This is evident by the enormous response he got from the crowd upon his entrance to the cage.

As Andrew says, the pressure of headlining a show for a title added to the pressure, but it didn’t effect his performance.

“To be honest I was a little bit nervous going into the fight,” revealed Keisuke. “I knew that he (Locke) had a background in kickboxing and had belts in Judo and BJJ. I was hurt in training so I wasn’t able to prepare like I wanted but overall things went pretty good”

Andrew continued, “You know I love the pressure. The crowd was so energetic and great that it got me pumped up for the fight and I was able to use that to get the belt.”

Some reports of the fight had Andrew in trouble of possibly being submitted by Locke, but according to Keisuke, there wasn’t any real threat the whole fight.

“First I got him with a flying knee and after that I hit him with a roundhouse to the midsection. He came at me so I took him down, hit him a few times then passed his guard. He came up in kind of a single leg to take me down but I got a keylock on him and rolled him over and switched to an armbar and finished him,” explained Keisuke.

Now that he has a championship, Andrew is contemplating his next move, but like a true champion, he’s leaning towards continuing to defend his title before moving into the pro circuit. “I should defend this title once or twice before going pro. It’s great that we have two really good organizations up here (the FCFF and Sportfight) that support amateur fighters that it’s great to be able to fight for.”

According to Keisuke, his amateur career has helped him develop his game and it’s been the correct path for him to prepare for his future in MMA. “My amateur career has been very important to helping me find where my game is really at. It’s helped me make sure I’ll be ready to make a big impact right away when I turn pro either late this year or early next year.”

No matter where Andrew ends up in his fighting career, he’s quick to give credit to the team that’s helped him get to where he is now. “The training at Straight Blast is tremendous. I’ve got awesome wrestlers, BJJ and MMA guys to work with. I’m lucky because I’ve got all the resources that I need right now out of my gym.”

Keisuke concluded by saying, “I want to thank everybody at Straight Blast for the opportunity to train and fight for them. Without them I can’t do this. I also want to thank the fans, their support has been tremendous.”

Official results for “Rumble at the Roseland 16″ held July 16th, 2005 at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon.

Presented by the FCFF “Full Contact Fighting Federation.

Lightweight Championship:

Keisuke Andrew defeated Mel Locke at 2:59 of Round 1 via submission due to an armbar.

The building was in anticipation the entire evening, waiting to see this match. The cheers and screams of the fans during the entrances of the two fighters were like something the FCFF has never seen before. Mel Locke, who is known for his fast pace style, wasted no time engaging his opponent and getting this fight started. Keisuke Andrew was prepared and met his opponent blow for blow. The two went to mat and Locke had what appeared to be a potential fight ending guillotine choke, but Keisuke was able to find a way out, and the Jiu-Jitsu specialist began to work his game from the top position. Mel worked hard for escapes while Keisuke battled to keep him down. The fight ended when Keisuke applied an armbar, and after many escape attempts, Locke was finally forced to tap out

Clarence Barela defeated Jason Vidonic at 1:52 of Round 2 via submission due to strikes.

Thomas La Cour defeated Kelly McMillan at 1:55 of Round 1 via submission due to a front choke.

Crae Bassett defeated Vince Meyer at 2:40 of Round 1 via submission due to strikes.

Superfight:

Aaron Stark defeated Kyle Keeney at 1:18 of Round 1 via submission due to a rear naked choke.

Kyle Keeney came out very aggressive and looked as though he was going to have the edge on his Team Quest opponent. However, Aaron Stark was able to use his opponent’s aggression against him, taking his back and securing the choke.

Info/Background:

Keisuke moved from Japan at the age of 8 and moved to the Portland area. He attended Beaverton High School and graduated in 96. He began to watch UFC and lved the excitement. This was back in the days of Royce Gracie and Dan Severn. He went to his first live event at Rumble at the Roseland in 2002 and was enamored with it. Keisuke trained for 3 years before hitting his first fight, which he won. He wanted to make sure he had the correct tools in place before he made the plunge.

Keisuke has stated he likes to submit his opponents. This goes to his background in BJJ and training with Team Impact.

Plans:

Keisuke has been nursing some injuries and is taking a break from competitive side. Feeling a little burnt out, he's training, taching, and taking it easy til his body has recovered and his mind is fresh.

Inspirations:

From his love of submission, it's easy to see who he admires in the professional scene. He notes Kazushi Sakuraba, Royce Gracie, and Genki Sudo as his inspirations. Gracie was the pioneer of the submission game and Sakuraba took it to the next level. With a perfect record and his dedication, maybe in the future we can add Keisuke Andrew to that mix.
